Suspect shot during Tifton police chase

June 8, 2008

Tifton -- A Tifton police officer was nearly run over and the suspect was shot during a chase Friday night.

Just after 11:30 PM, an officer was trying to stop 21-year-old Devin Barrett on 9th street and Woodlong for loud music when he refused to stop.

Barrett got onto Highway 82 heading West. He then turned North on Central Avenue scraping and nearly running over an officer at that corner.  That's when Officer John Brannen shot at the car hitting Barrett in the arm.

That didn't stop Barrett. He then went East on 82 until he crashed into another car stopped at a red light. The driver in that car was not injured.

Barrett was transported to Tift Regional, and is facing charges of aggravated assault on an officer, and eight traffic violations including D-U-I. Officer Brannen is now on administrative leave while the G-B-I investigates.
