Albany -- Presidential candidate Barack Obama has made history, American history many in Southwest Georgia say they fought to see happen.

Senator Obama made history this week when he became the first African-American to secure enough delegates to be the nominee of a major political party.

Obama rode to victory with his theme for change . And a local civil rights leader says that this is a change he and many others have fought to make happen.

"People from slavery until now, their prayers that the reality of Dr. Martin Luther King's dream have been realized where people voted for the issues instead of their color," said Charles Sherrod.

The Dougherty County Election office also saw and continues to see a wave of new people registering to vote. And they say the majority of them have been African-Americans.
