Albany-  A Baker County Sheriff's deputy appeared in federal court Tuesday afternoon on extortion charges.

As we told you first Monday night Deputy Chad Smith is charged with extorting money from a criminal suspect. Smith was arrested by the GBI and FBI after work Monday.

Prosecutors say Smith accepted money from Monica Faye Jones of Colquitt County not to turn her in for a probation violation.

Tuesday afternoon, Judge Richard Hodge allowed Smith to be released on an unsecured bond. Smith is suspended from his job without pay.
