Albany -- Firefighters say the number of wildfires is up, and they want you to be careful this summer.
They say the hot, dry conditions are the perfect recipe for grass and brush fires, and a simple discarded cigarette butt can cause a destructive fire.
Families who will be away on vacation this summer should also think about fire prevention. Firefighters say you should start by putting any stored gasoline outside.
"Gasoline is only used for fueling something. So it should always be stored outside. You should make sure that you have working smoke detectors. So that means you should check your smoke detectors and, you should check your smoke detectors once a month," said Albany Fire Department Inspector, G. Jennings.
All electrical appliances should also be disconnected or turned off. Lightning storms or sudden electrical surges could cause a fire in this equipment while you are away.
