Gas cost vexes APD's budget

May 30, 2008

Albany -- Higher gas prices have put the Albany Police Department $65,000 over their fuel budget for the year with a month to go.

APD Media spokeswoman Phyllis Banks attributes the increase to the high price of gas and the department's increased numbers.  With more officers on the street, the department is using more vehicles.

Officers have been instructed by Chief James Younger to cut their idling time while they're working on reports, and when they can, to do more walking and talking patrols.

That means parking their vehicles and walking some neighborhoods in their beats and talking with citizens.
