Colquitt Co. - It was a deadly Memorial Day weekend on Georgia highways. 12 people were killed, including three members of a Colquitt County family.
Six people were inside a Ford Escort when it was struck head-on on Highway 133 in Colquitt County Monday night.
Troopers say Michael Burdette was driving a Ford Ranger and crossed the center line. Three people in the Escort were killed, 28-year-old Christian Gonzalez, 31-year-old Valeria Carlson, and 8-year-old Uriel Carlson all of Norman Park died as a result of their injuries.
"The SCRT team out of Valdosta are doing their own investigation as well, and it will be turned over to them," said Sr. Trooper Bobby Underwood of the Georgia State Patrol.
Three others and Burdette were injured. Three teenage passengers also injured in the Ford Escort were transported to Colquitt Medical Center where they remain. Two are in fair condition and another in serious.
Burdette is also listed in fair condition. The 8-year-old victim was not wearing his safety belt. Charges are currently pending in the case. We'll have more on this story tonight at six.
