Albany-- Albany city commissioners plan to move forward with a major transportation project downtown but the person in charge of downtown development doesn't think that's a smart move.
The city plans to relocate the bus station from West Oglethorpe to the area at Roosevelt and Washington.
Downtown Manager Don Buie says that will have a negative impact on businesses around the current station because there will be less foot traffic in Albany's Harlem District.
"The second concern that I have is that by relocating an already functioning bus stop downtown into the one available property or area that we have that we can use commercially, you're taking property permanently off the tax roll," said Buie.
A study done in 2002 suggested the move but Buie says things have changed since then and placing a non-taxpaying building in that big space will harm revitalization.
