Albany -- Westover High School had a couple of athletes signing college scholarships Tuesday, as Katori Upshaw and Brandon Lee both signed on to play at the next level.
Upshaw is a four-year letter winner in basketball and track for the Lady Patriots, and will join the Albany State hoops team next season.
The senior was part of a Westover team that averaged close to 20 wins a year, and Upshaw says she's looking forward to playing at the Division II level.
"Right now, I'm really excited," says Upshaw. "Probably when it comes down to it, I'll be nervous, but right now I'm excited."
The senior was looking to stay close to home, and on close inspection, Albany State had just what she was looking for.
"This year, learning the different athletic programs, and academic programs that they have, that really drew me closer to them," says Upshaw.
Katori Upshaw has a 3.4 GPA at Westover.
Brandon Lee quarterbacked the Westover football team to the state quarterfinals, and is also a standout for the Patriots on the baseball field, and has signed to play baseball at Andrew College.
Lee hit close to .300 for Westover this year, with five home runs, and says he liked the family atmosphere at Andrew.
"The campus, the coaches, the people there, it's a great feeling," says Lee. "I feel like I can fit in good there. It's like a family there."
The Westover coaches made a point to applaud Lee for his efforts in the weight room and on the practice field in high school, and the senior says he'll continue to work hard to prepare to play third base for Andrew.
"During the offseason I'll get my footwork together, and practice fielding the ball a little better," says Lee. "Get a little bit better at everything I'm supposed to do, and work out hard."
Westover lost to South Effingham in the first round of the state playoffs.
