Albany -- After more than a decade as a state Senator, Michael Meyer von Bremen officially kicked off his campaign Monday night for a spot on Georgia's court of appeals.  He hosted a fundraiser Monday night in Albany.

He's practiced several types of law including mediation and arbitration and says he'll bring that neutrality to the court.

"One of the major things you've got to try to maintain in the courts as a judge is to maintain its independence.  That's one of the things that makes our country stand out far and beyond other countries in the world that do not have so much of an independent judiciary," said Georgia Court of Appeals candidate Michael Meyer von Bremen.

Twelve judges sit on the court of appeals.

Since it was created in 1907, only 70 justices have served.

Meyer von Bremen is running for a seat vacated by a retiring justice from Augusta.  Decatur lawyer Chris McFadden is also running for the seat.
