Lowndes County - Most students attend school and work hard knowing it will pay off later in life.  Monday, Lauren Burns' hard work paid off early.

Burns, a 16 year old Lowndes High Sophomore, was the Gold Prize Winner of the "Where There's a Wheel There's a Way" program. After her name was announced, Burns looked around in disbelief. She then called her mom and sister and exclaimed, "I just won a car!" When asked where she will be driving first, Burns said, "I am going to drive it to my best friends Morgan's house!" Currently, Burns drives her sister's old car which is a 1995 Nissan Maxima.

Wes Taylor, LHS Principal, said, "This program is designed to recognize and award students doing what is right. Lauren Burns represents our student body well."

She chose a 2008 Nissan Sentra four door car from a pool of three vehicles provided from Griner Chevrolet.  The other cars were a Nissan Versa and a Pontiac G5. Representing the dealership, Clay Griner said, "For the last three years, we have been proud to support and contribute to this deserving program."

In order to be eligible for the car give away, students must: pass all classes, have no discipline referrals, have no more than two documented tardies per class per semester, have a satisfactory rating in VIP, and have  no more than 10 absences per block per year.

In addition to a car, 158 other prizes were given away valued in excess of $28,000. To be eligible for the Bronze and Silver categories of prizes, students had to meet various levels of criteria similar to the Gold Prize criteria.
