Student Leaders Met at ASU for Forum

May 9, 2008

Dougherty County -- Students from Dougherty County middle and high schools come up with ways to help themselves and their classmates succeed.

Students leaders from each of the schools met at Albany State University as part of the National Issues Forums community series.

The moderators were sophomores from Dougherty and Monroe High Schools.

They said at Dougherty High books are old and tattered and there aren't enough to go around.

ASU Sophomore Stefon Plummer said, "The schools they have low expectations of the kids.  I experienced that at my high school and some of the high schools are underpaid meaning that some of the facilities are not up to date.  I also experienced that at my high school and see that at other high schools down here."

Students also complained parents aren't as involved in their student's studies as they could be.

Information gathered from Friday's forum will be sent to the Kettering Foundation and combined with other forums happening across the nation.
