May 7, 2008

Albany - Deerfield-Windsor's John Smith is taking his pole vaulting skills to the University of Georgia but his goals are even higher.

John Smith signed a track scholarship with the University of Georgia on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith won the GISA AAA state title in the pole vault and last year won a Georgia High School Association state title at Lee County.

Smith is one of the top pole vaulters in the nation clearing 16 feet during a meet this spring.

He hopes Georgia is the next step in his goal of competing in the 2012 Summer Olympic games in London.

John Smith said "Probably around 18'6" or 19 feet to be able to win the trials to be on the USA team.I know I can do it and it can be done. But it is not going to come easy."

John Smith also won a state title at the GISA state track meet in the 100 meter dash.
