Suspect swims to attempt escape

April 29, 2008

Albany -- A brief but dramatic manhunt in northwest Albany Tuesday.

A man running from Sheriff's Investigators jumped into a swamp and swam to get away from them.

Sheriff's Lt. Dean Gore was trying to arrest 48 year old James Strickland behind the Dollar Inn when Strickland attacked him.

Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Captain Craig Dodd said "There was a scuffle. The Officer was injured slightly, not serious. The subject ran, got in the pond behind the motel, and swam over the area around 21st, behind Mann's Self Storage."

State Patrol Helicopter Pilot Sgt. Kevin Coalson spotted him from the air and led deputies to him.

Strickland, who was wanted for probation violation, is now also charged with obstruction of an officer.
