Qualifying ends soon

April 28, 2008

Albany --  Candidates who want your vote in upcoming elections must officially qualify this week to run for office.

Eleven Democrat candidates for Dougherty County offices went through the qualification process at the Plumbers and Steamfitters union headquarters on Clark Avenue on Monday.

Candidates paid qualifying fees and signed notarized documents confirming their commitment to run.

"This is the first hurdle," said Dougherty Sheriff Candidate Kevin Sproul. "The next hurdle is the election in July and than the general election in November. This is the first time I have ever qualified, so I am learning.

"We are glad to get it over with so that we can hit the ground running and make sure everything is up to par," says Dougherty Sheriff Candidate James Williams.

Dougherty County Republicans qualified at Albany Travel on Dawson Road. So far, school board member David Maschke and County Commissioner Lamar Hudgins are the only two republicans to qualify. Candidates have until noon on Friday to sign up.
