April -- The city of Albany requested the DOT to install high mast lighting along the Nottingham Way Interchange at Liberty Expressway. It's a plan that will make the roadway safer for drivers.

Craig Solomon , communication officer with the Georgia DOT said, "This is a good improvement. There's a lot of traffic in that area and I know they're looking at upgrading that interchange and doing some other project work around there. High mast lighting is something that's needed at that interchange - maybe not at all of them -  but it's definitely needed there."

Some other new improvements under consideration include the addition of a left turning lane at the intersection of Nottingham and Ledo Road by the end of this year. It's expected to alleviate traffic build up in the area during high drive periods and on the weekends.

The 9 high mast lighting poles cost $228,740.00 which was paid for by the DOT. The city of Albany is responsible for the maintenance and cost of power.

One feature of high mast lighting is the light emitted will provide drivers with better visibility of the road.
