Tifton --  Raleigh Coarsey, who most recently held the rank of Detective with TPD, is challenging incumbent Gary Vowell in the July Republican primary election for Sheriff.

Raleigh Coarsey says many people have approached him about running for Sheriff and one of his goals if elected, is community support in cracking down on major crimes.

"More recent events of a robbery, an armed robbery at the Piggly Wiggly on the Northside of town, an officer being shot over the last few days, in the car, on the Southside of Tifton. No where in Tift County is crime free, and we need to see if we can't change that. And it's going to be a community effort," Caorsey says.

Coarsey has been a member of the Georgia Gang Investigators Association, experience he says will aid in the battle against growing gang activity in Tift County.

Other plans, he says, include increasing road patrol throughout the county and bringing an open office to the public.
