Dewar moves class outdoors

April 14, 2008

Valdosta - Learning is a little more exciting at Dewar Elementary in Valdosta.

The fifth grade class wrote letters to area stores and leaders expressing their desire for an outdoor classroom.

Over the weekend, Home Depot made it happen.

They built an out door classroom complete with a pond, garden and picnic tables.

Weyerhaeuser supplied a gazebo.

The students say they love the new area and can't wait to come to class.

"I'm looking forward to science class because we can test the water and see the temperatures and what bacteria is in it," says 5th Grader Haylee Van Horn.

Her classmate Kara Nelson agrees.  "Sometimes maybe even art class because we can come out here and paint pictures of the brick wall and some of the flowers they brought in."

Home Depot has also agreed to maintain the classroom for the next 10 years.
