Vacation burglars

April 12, 2008

This is the time of year when burglars want to use that opportunity to get their hands on the valuables inside of your home.

Albany Police responded to a number of burglaries within the past few days. Residents on 10th Avenue, Residence Avenue and some in the River Crest apartments were just a few of the burglary victims in the city within the past week.

A laptop, Playstation 3 and other electronics were stolen from a unit at River Crest apartments when a burglar broke in the back door.

Vannessa Cox lives in the complex and says she doesn't take her safety for granted. " we have additional locks from what the apartment complex gave us."

Investing in good locks for your home or apartment is something Lieutenant Rouse with Dougherty County Police says can save you trouble in the long run. "defiantly get you good locks, one thing we tell people is one thing you invest in especially with your house is get good dead bolt locks, maybe even an alarm service can help out"

Another safeguard to keeping your home safe is getting to know your neighbors. So they can keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

"Another thing is to get you neighbors, let them know, who's suppose to be at this house and if they see someone the don't recognize call the police, or have them call you and say hey I see someone around your house that's not suppose to be there." Said Lieutenant Cliff Rouse.

Windows and doors being left open is another thing officers say they see all too often, and in those cases it's very hard to collect evidence if the person knows what he or she is doing.

One thing the Lieutenant said a lot of people forget is to write down the serial number for all the electronics in their home, so they can entered into a data base if stolen. That way if it turns up at a pawn shop or elsewhere they'll know it didn't get there legally.

Another good tip to keep in mind is that if you leave town for more than a couple days make sure you get your newspaper delivery suspended or have a friend or neighbor pick it up, along with any mail that may be delivered while you're away from home.
