Cook County --    The Georgia Department of Transportation wants you to be careful in work zones.

The DOT kicked off Work Zone Safety Week Monday just north of Exit 39 on I-75 in Cook County.

DOT workers, the Cook County Sheriff's Office, and state troopers encourage drivers to slow down in work zones and obey all signs in those construction areas.

"A lot of times when we stop people in these safety zone. One excuse that they always use is "I didn't think the work zone existed if the workers weren't present. Our response to that is no its 24/7," says Tifton GSP Post Commander Scott Woodell.

Nationally, one work zone fatality occurs about every eight hours.
