Albany State University marks 105th anniversary

 April 3, 2008

Albany --  A visit from the Tom Joyner Morning Show coincided with a Founder's Day Convocation on the ASU campus. ASU was founded in 1903 by Dr. Joseph W. Holley after he read about the lack of educational opportunities for African Americans in the Albany area.

"Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley was our founder, he was reading a book about a bunch of black folks by W.E.B. Dubois, and it had a chapter in there about the history of Albany and Dougherty County. It talked about the extreme poverty and illiteracy rates and he was basically inspired," said Interim VP Institutional Advancement, Clifford Porter.

After the Convocation, a traditional graveside service followed. The daughter of Albany State's founder laid a wreath at the grave of Dr. Holley, who is buried on the university's campus.
