VSU starts mosquito testing

April 1, 2008

Valdosta - While most people swat mosquitoes, some students at Valdosta State are hoping the pests will swarm in their direction.

The group works each spring to collect mosquitoes and identify their numbers.

They say the number of mosquitoes is unusually high this year, but they're not the type that typically carry disease.

The students know because they also test the mosquitoes for West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and any new viruses.

"If its here in the county we want to alert people to that fact so they can take extra precautions about avoiding being bitten primarily by the mosquitoes," says Mark Blackmore, the program director.

The group also helps inform the county and city where they need to spray and they hope to document and identify seasonal occurrences of the mosquitoes.
