Huntsville, AL -- The South Georgia Wildcats won their season opener on a miracle play Saturday night, beating Tennessee Valley 59-55.
Trailing by three with 5-seconds left in the game, quarterback Cecil Lester completed a pass over the middle of the field to former ASU wide receiver Alvin Ray Jackson, who then lateraled the ball back to Lester, and the Wildcats quarterback ran into the endzone for the game winning score.
South Georgia (1-0) had taken a 52-48 lead with under a minute to go, after Roland Cola came up with a big interception, and Lester found P.J. Berry for the go ahead score.
But they couldn't keep the Vipers out of the endzone, and Tennessee Valley went back in front 55-52 with 22 seconds left, setting the stage for the heart-stopping win in Hunstsville
The Wildcats are back in action next week, as they host Louisville at 7:30 p.m.
