Albany --  Nearly two dozen East Albany homes were evacuated this morning because of a severed gas line.

The contractor contacted Water, Gas, and Light before beginning, but the gas line put in back in the 1950's wasn't on the current map. When the line burst, firefighters evacuated neighbors.

"We actually evacuated one square block of, this block of Rosser and the block you see over there Hudson approximately 15 to 18 homes," said AFD Captain Pete Giddins.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes 30 minutes later. Firefighters say WG&L quickly responded and shut down the gas line to the home.

The area is about two blocks South of Oakridge, near the intersection with Radium Springs Road.
