Albany -- The short preseason is just about over for the South Georgia Wildcats, as the team will head to Tennessee Valley to take on the Vipers in their first game of the season this weekend.
Cecil Lester has won the quarterback battle, and will be under center on opening day.
Lester is in his second season with the Cats, backing-up record-setter D. Bryant last year.
While the former Fort Valley stand-out didn't see much action on the field last season, Wildcats head coach Derek Stingley says he's very comfortable handing the keys to the offense over to the three-year veteran.
"He's ready," says Stingley. "He's been in this league before, he's won games before. I don't want people to think he's brand new. He knows exactly what's going on, and that's why we believe in him, and that's why we're going with him."
Lester says, "I learned from a lot of good guys, as far as watching D. Bryant throw the ball, and being coached by Rickey Foggie, I got taught by the best."
The Wildcats kick off the season Saturday at Tennessee Valley at 8:30 p.m.
