City and county leaders hope to curb young drinking

March 25, 2008

Albany--  Underaged drinking is practically an epidemic and it can be deadly.

Dozens of concerned citizens packed the Dougherty County School Administration building to voice their concerns. At the town hall meeting Tuesday evening, there was an open discussion about what to do to curb the problem.

A panel included law enforcers and students. The School System partnered with the Morehouse College of Medicine in hopes of making a difference.

"I think it's hope if we reach them at the middle age. I agree with a young lady that was up there on the panel that if we get them when they're young and instill that in them in conglomeration with clubs and being good role models," said Program Coordinator Debera Ayers.

Two similar events are scheduled in Columbus and Buena Vista. The Medical School is working on a study to come up with ways to reduce underaged drinking.
