Phoebe "tops out" their new building

March 20, 2008

Albany-  Construction on Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital's second medical tower reached a milestone today.

Phoebe held a "topping out" ceremony on top of their parking deck because construction crews have just completed the top floor of the structure. As the custom goes, a pine tree with an American flag were hoisted to the tallest part of the structure Thursday. The new building will house an expanded Oncology Department that doctor's are anxious to open.

"We have to have this facility because there's a lot of cancer in southwest Georgia but we need to be in the cancer prevention business, and we're doing that. Gradually since 1990 there's been a decrease in cancer death rates, but in southwest Georgia we have a higher death rate than the state," said Dr. Phillips Roberts, Phoebe Cancer Center Oncologist.

The 46.1 million dollar project started July 16th. More than 125 workers are on site and have placed nearly 95 cubic yards of concrete with 800 tons of reinforced steel to create the buildings skeleton. The project should be complete by year's end.
