Valdosta - A Valdosta woman turned her hobby into a business and Thursday she was honored for her success.

The Chamber of Commerce named Earleen Thomas the minority business owner of the year.

Thomas owns Nairobi African Art.

She says she brought her love and interest for African Art to community events and got such good feedback that she opened a store in Lake Park.

She says her favorite part is sharing the story of each piece.

"I love the vision the natives have. They have a vision within tem and to carve it out of wood or stone or glass is just amazing to me. And I like to pass that type of knowledge onto the people of Valdosta," Thomas says.

Carter's Septic Tank and Sewer Line Cleaning and Scott and Roberts Mortuary were also nominated for the award.

Thomas will also receive a number of prizes from the Chamber including $500 in services from US Press.
