Lowndes County - A inmate being held on forgery charges committed suicide by hanging inside the Lowndes County jail early Wednesday morning.

According to Captain J.D. Yeager, 20 year-old Joel Smith asked law enforcers Tuesday to be moved from his cell. They say moments after he was moved, he hit another inmate and was immediately put in solitary confinement.

They say although the solitary cells are under 30 minute checks, it appears Smith made a noose out of his jumpsuit and hanged himself on the back of the door.

Smith was pronounced dead at 3:30 Wednesday morning at South Georgia Medical Center.

He'd been housed at the Lowndes County Jail since December for three county of felony forgery.
