Albany -- Dontonio Wingfield played in the NBA, is a four-time high school state champion, is frequently mention as "The Greatest High School Basketball Player In State History," and now...a coach.
Wingfield is coaching an 18-and-under traveling team called the Albany Hawks.
The team is comprised of players not currently playing for their high school teams, and the former Westover standout says he's sharing his basketball knowledge with the high school hoops hopefuls.
"I'm sure they understand I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the game of basketball," says Wingfield. "I'm kinda motivating them to get better, so they can be prepared to play next year for a high school team."
The former Westover high school star says it's a great experience to be on the other side of the whistle.
"I always thought I'd be able to teach what I know about basketball, and this gives the me opportunity to do so," says Wingfield.
There's a "Meet the Hawks" day Saturday at 10 a.m. at Henderson Gym, with a Barbeque fundraiser, as well as the South Georgia Platinum band and dance team, and Uptown Studios.
