ASU runners sprinting to national championships

March 11, 2008

Albany -- In the first year of the programs existence, the Albany State Indoor Track team is sending two members to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Seniors Rodney Coley and Garrion Martin will be representing the Rams in the 60 meter dash.

"This is the first opportunity we had to compete," says Coley, "and we have a lot of weight on our shoulders for the freshmen and sophomores to go do something next year."

Coley ranked 9th in the nation in the 60 meters, and Martin third.

"I'm like one tenth away from number one, so that's like a step away from winning," says Martin.

The Albany State runners know a national title could be just a fraction of a second away.

Martin says, "I'm basically a race away from being the first indoor national champ. So I have to find a step, somewhere." "

We'll be coming out of the blocks awfully fast," says Coley. "I'm a typical block starter, so this will be perfect for me. A shorter race, just get out and maintain the race."

The indoor national championships are held at Minnesota State University, with races beginning Friday.
