Bainbridge-- The house at 936 Japonica was vacant for around a month when it caught fire early Saturday morning. It took firefighters over an hour to get the blaze under control.

When they entered the house to check for hotspots, the ceiling came down and hit Bainbridge Public Safety Assistant Fire Chief Marty Brown in the head, knocking him unconscious.   Chief Dennis Mock said, "It could have been a lot worse. We could have had a fatality on a fire fighter but thank God he had on his full turnout gear and whenever the ceiling fell it hit him on the helmet."

The house was a total loss. Brown was checked out at the hospital and released, and is already back to work.
