Cops on Doughnut Shops

March 6, 2008

Albany -- I'm sure you've all heard the jokes about cops and doughnuts, but law enforcers in Albany are ready to raise some serious dough for a good cause.

They're teaming up with Krispy Kreme to raise money for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Starting Friday, cops will be outside the Krispy Kreme off North Slappey in Albany to collect donations from customers Last year's event was a big success.

Officers raised a little more than $9,000.  This year's goal is $10,000.

"We want to really exceed $10,000 this year, because the money really will go a long way.  It will allow our athletes not to worry about training, transportation, or any other things like that.  Their main focus should be on competing, and that's what we're hoping this money will allow them to do, said Phyllis Banks-Whitley, APD Media Manager.

Dougherty County's Police's Lt. J.C. Phillips said, "Last year is when it rained the most, and we did the best we have at that point.  Regardless of the weather, whether it's raining cold or anything else we'll definitely be out here."

The event kicks-off outside the Krispy Kreme off North Slappey Friday morning at 9 a.m. and goes through Sunday night at 6 p.m.
