Valdosta - High prices at the pump are changing the way Valdosta police patrol.

Police are beginning what they call smarter patrols.

They'll be rolling out heavier bike patrols.

Officers are also being asked to sit their cruisers in crime hot spots rather than constantly patrol.

"I'm not using fuel, I'm sitting there watching traffic as it goes by, I'm visible so I'm actually a deterrent so you are accomplishing three or four things at one time and that's what we are asking them to do. Patrol smarter," says Commander Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police Department.

If gas prices continue to climb, stricter measures may be put into place for all city vehicles.

However, law enforcers would most likely be exempt those.
