Americus- A year ago Saturday, a powerful EF-3 tornado demolished parts of Americus. Sumter Regional Hospital was ground zero for the damage. Tuesday, the hospital has permission to begin moving equipment into its interim facility.
Work continues on Sumter Regional East, what will serve as the temporary inpatient facility while a new hospital is being built. A temporary occupancy permit will finally allow the hospital to begin to move equipment into the new hospital.
"It's a temporary certificate of occupancy from the fire Marshall which would allow some of our personnel to move in equipment into the interim facility," said Comfort Green SRH V.P. of Communications.
Sumter Regional hopes to open the doors of Sumter Regional East April first. The new hospital will have as many as 70 inpatient rooms, and allow doctor's to perform surgery.
