ASU Football begins spring practice

February 23, 2008

Albany -- For the first time in four years, the Albany State football team is not opening up spring practice as the defending SIAC champs.

The Rams run was ended by Tuskegee, as the Tigers gave Albany State its only conference loss of the season in 2007.

The rare conference-home loss by ASU denied them the SIAC championship, but the Rams still finished 8-3 and advanced to the Division II playoffs.

Albany State was out on a muddy practice field Saturday for the first day of spring practice, and head coach Mike White says the time they spend on the field now is very important for a strong season.

"It means the world," says White, "because there's a lot of things that you don't work on during the season. You have to get it done during the offseason. This gives us the time to slow it down, and get a good foundation, and get the basics, so you can go faster in the fall."

The Rams open up the season at home August 30th against Shaw.

It's the only non-conference game for Albany State this season.
