Marine arrested for hitting a police officer during a high speed chase

February 22, 2008

Worth County-  A Sylvester Police Officer is recovering after being hit by a car in a police chase.

Around 2:30 Friday morning, a Worth County Sheriff's deputy stopped a car for speeding on Highway 82 west of Sylvester. While the deputy was checking his information, the driver sped away and led the deputy on a nine mile chase that included gunfire and running down an officer.

The deputy says 23 year old Reginald Fluellen Junior was driving more than 90 miles per hour when he pulled him over here on Highway 82.

"He was going to get him out of the car and the guy just floored it and took off toward Sylvester," said Worth County Sheriff Freddie Thompkins.

So the deputy took off, too. As they approached Sylvester, Fluellen tried to lose him.

"He started turning offside streets trying to elude him," said Thompkins.

It was behind me at the corner of Carter Road and Peach Street that Officer Tracy Jones was trying to help another motorist that's when Reginald Fluellen came around the corner and hit Officer Jones.

"When he run over him and knocked him up and down in the ditch he got up and shot at him a time or two," said Thompkins.

Three shots according to Sylvester Police, but the bullets missed. The deputy continued to chase Fluellen along Peach Street to Willingham Street and toward Monroe. Fluellen ditched the car behind a mobile home park and ran, but didn't get far before officers caught up. Even as they tried to arrest him, there was a struggle.

"I think they did for a few minutes before they could get him handcuffed," said Thompkins.

Fluellen later told deputies he was an AWOL marine from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Sheriff Freddie Thompkins said Fluellen would have to answer to charges of aggravated assault on a police officer before facing military charges.

Fluellen remains in the Worth County Jail without bond. When investigators checked his record they found out he has a suspended license and no insurance. Fluellen gave investigators a Sylvester address but we're told most of his family lives in Albany.
