Albany- The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce honored Dougherty County's six STAR students Wednesday afternoon at Doublegate Country Club.
Each student chose a teacher they felt has helped them to achieve their goals to be honored as a star teacher. The STAR program which stands for Student Teacher Achievement Recognition has been in place for the last 50 years. The program recognizes Georgia's future leaders and honors the teachers who have encourage those students to do their best. Wednesday Deerfield-Windsor senior Will Stephenson said while band instructor Scott Young didn't help with his SAT's he's encourage him to be a better student.
"He's been a huge inspiration to me, he's been a great musician, he's really intelligent himself so, just talking with him I think has really encouraged me," said Will Stephenson, Dougherty County STAR Student.
Other STAR students included Adrienne Shepherd from Albany High, Kallie Philips from Byne Memorial Baptist, Alyncia Robinson from Dougherty Comprehensive, Sarah Cannady from Sherwood Christian and Destiny Tolliver from Westover High. STAR Teachers included Albany High's Nan Sweat, Byne Memorial Baptist School's Donnie Lanier, Dougherty High's Helen Davis, Sherwood Christian Academy's Steve Nowack and Westover High School's Barbara Jack.
