More charter schools coming to Albany

February 18, 2008

Albany-- Dougherty County School Administrators say two new charter schools will better prepare students for college and to compete in the global marketplace. Monday night, School board members formally approved a petition okayed by the State Board of Education last week.

It will make Dougherty International Studies Magnet School and Dougherty Comprehensive High School charter schools and continue the International Baccalaureate program students now begin at Dougherty International Studies Charter School. "It's designed for students to really become global thinkers. Our students have an opportunity to become immersed in Spanish, French, and Japanese," Curriculum Director Dianne Daniels said.

Charter schools have greater local control over curriculum and programs. The elementary school was one of only five charter schools in the country to be named a National School of Excellence.
