Albany -- The Darton College softball team lost for the first time this season, falling 8-5 and 10-1 to defending national champion Chipola in its home opener Tuesday.
Chipola took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, before Elena Litvina beat out a two-out infield single to score Hannah Layton and tie the game in the 2nd.
Nicole VanSchoick knocked in two runs in the top of the third inning to give Chipola a 3-1 lead, but Stephanie Martin erased the advantage with one swing of the bat, with a two-grand slam over the wall in left.
Chipola would come back and score five unanswered runs to hand Britni McCall her first loss on the mound.
Tiffany Timmons took the loss in game two.
Darton (6-2) hosts Lake City next Tuesday, with a double-header beginning at 4pm.
