Phoebe gets approval for new Pet/Ct scan

February 6, 2008

Albany -- Phoebe Putney Hospital is about to buy an expensive piece of medical equipment to serve patients better.  Doctors say by this summer they'll have the latest Pet/CT scan machine everyday.

Phoebe will buy a G-E Healthcare Discovery molecular imaging scan for two and a half million dollars. It should have a permanent home and be operational by July. Right now Phoebe uses a travel scanner like this one day a week.

Doctors say having it everyday will save lives. Dr. Sam Belakhlef said  "cancer treatment can not wait for the week of diagnosis before treatment. So what you want is to diagnosis the patient and treat right away."

Doctors say this is the best scanner on the market for both oncology and neurological medical treatment.
