Vienna -- After serving just 26 days in office the Mayor of Vienna resigned from office Friday, effective immediately.

Lanier Roberts defeated incumbent Willie Davis in November. But shortly after taking office, controversy arose when Roberts chose to not reappoint city clerk-treasurer Gail Bembry.

The city council did not approve his appointment to the position and re-instated Bembry last Wednesday.

In a letter to City of Vienna, Roberts said he chose to resign out of love for his city, concern for the health of he and his wife, and a burning desire to return to preaching God's word without interruption.

Mayor Pro Tem Eddie Daniels will serve until a special election is held.
