Tifton --  A Tifton Police officer on patrol early Saturday morning busted a Florida man who had climbed on top of the Tifton Mall and was stealing copper from air conditioning units.

Officer Danny Hayes spotted a U-Haul truck behind the mall.  Thirty-seven-year-old John Eugene Odom was using that truck to store commercial grade cooling units that he had just stolen from heating and air conditioning systems on the rooftop of the mall.

"During the night he was apparently going on top of the roof stripping the AC units to obtain the copper, primarily the copper parts of it to sell for scrap," says Tifton Police Detective Raleigh Coarsey.

Odom is being held in the Tift County Jail facing felony theft charges. No word on how much it will cost to fix the damaged units.
