Turner County makes important decision

January 17, 2008

Ashburn - - Last month's tornado in Ashburn brought up questions about the city and county's ability to alert the public. Thursday, Turner county commissioners hired a new EMA director.

At a special called meeting, the commission appointed Peter Giddens as the new Emergency Management Director.

They also decided to put Interim 911 Director Kathy Morgan in that job permanently. At a heated meeting last week, many people urged county commissioners to make serious emergency management changes.

Ashburn leaders weren't sure what the county would do, so this week they hired their own EMA director. It's the first time Ashburn and Turner county will have separate ones.

"I cant comment on what the city did. I'm not familiar with the council's actions so I can't comment on that. I think its a great thing that both of us have EMA directors, the more people the better," said County Commission Chair Daryl Hall.

Some critics claimed that Morgan isn't qualified for the 911 job.

Commissioner Hall says she is capable and understands other changes need to be made with the county's 911 center.
