Albany - Some Albany police patrol cars will soon have new cameras with the capability of tracking the officers movements. 15 outdated camera systems will be updated with digital video systems.
The digital cameras will be able to automatically store video, rather than using video tapes. They also have the capability to track the exact location of the vehicle with global positioning satellite. City Manager Alfred Lott said, "What it will do is give us an accurate grid coordinates, satellite grid of where that particular car is at a certain time and exactly where it is, that will help us in particular with police safety."
The new camera system will cost about $146,000. Software to log GPS information from the cameras will be an additional expense.
