Valdosta - The 5th ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers open Gulf South Conference play with a 57-48 win over North Alabama Monday night at the VSU Complex.
It is the tenth straight win for the Lady Blazers (15-1, 1-0) who were picked in the preseason to win the GSC's eastern divisino title.
Leschelle Matthews led the VSU women with 13 points and Nina Risto was in double figures for a sixth straight game with 12 points.
The Valdosta State men needed overtime but the Blazers win their GSC opener 92-86 over North Alabama.
Ray Cummings had a career high in scoring and rebounds with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Cummings was one of six Blazers to hit double figures in scoring.
Jamahl Stokes had a career high in rebounds and in blocked shots with six.
Valdosta State men are 9-6 and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference.
The VSU basketball teams are on the road Saturday at West Georgia.
