Lee County-  Lee County department heads are beginning budget preparations and fire officials say this will be their chance to address their manpower shortage.

The issue came up in September after 12 year old Tony Long died when a candle tipped over setting his Somerset Drive home on fire. Fire fighters said they could have gotten to Long quicker if they had more men on the truck. That's what their asking for in their next budget, three men per truck.

"As we're approaching and working on the 2008-2009 budget that we're coming up on we certainly hope during this time some of the thing we're presenting and intent to present we hope to find the funding in there to put on additional manpower," said Lee County Interim Fire Chief.

The initial proposal was made after Long's death, but with Lee County's tight budget, nothing could be done until a new budget cycle. Planning for the budget will begin in April.
