Albany auto dealership burglarized

December 31, 2007

Albany -- An East Albany auto dealership is broken into, and nearly a dozen cars  burglarized, doing thousands of dollars in damage.

Car windows are shattered in 11 vehicles at the maintenance shop behind David Smith Autoland on East Ogelthorpe's Auto Row. The break-in happened sometime Saturday or Sunday.  It was discovered Sunday afternoon.

The burglar or burglars cut a hole in the fence at the back of the shop, and then broke the auto windows with car parts.

The only parts stolen were the car radios, but the owner said they did thousands of dollars in damage to the car dashboards. David Smith said "It's probably teenagers, probably kids. Radios and things like that are not typically stolen anymore. They are pretty useless, so that was most of what was stolen this time. So kids with nothing to do."

Smith said one of his cars was stolen from this shop Christmas Day, but was found abandoned a couple of days later.

Greg's Auto Service, just across from the Autoland Shop, was also broken into over the weekend. The owner reports that ten car keys were taken from the office, but the vehicles had been disabled, so they could not be stolen.
