Civil Rights Institute Expansion

Updated:

December 28, 2007

Albany -- An Albany museum that houses memories of an important part of American history is expanding.

Steel has already gone up for the expansion of the Albany Civil Rights Institute. It's expanding into a 12,000 square feet building.

Organizers say it's important to make sure Albany's history is housed in a state of the art facility.

"If you go to any civil rights museums in the country, you'll see a section on Albany, a full section because it was such a pinnacle movement. It was large because it was just before Birmingham," says Joy Bell.

The city broke ground on the expansion in June. It's expected to open next August.
