East Albany church to feed people in need

December 13, 2007

Albany--One east Albany church hopes to spread a little holiday cheer to people in need this holiday season.   This Saturday, members with First Apostolic Church plan to give away lots of food to families who otherwise might go hungry this time of year.

In August, members of First Apostolic Church in Albany provided food to hundreds of people in need. This time they're at it again.

"Every year the turnout is very, very good," says Pastor Betty Jackson.

So good, that Jackson along with volunteers typically serve about 400 to 600 people every time. They've been feeding families in need around Christmas time for the last thirteen years.

"The people are very thankful. The people are very grateful," says Jackson.

"Every body is welcome to come.  We're going to have turkey, ham, canned food, and we're going to have bread, greens," says church volunteer, Lillie Thomas.

Church volunteer, Lillie Thomas, says the upcoming food giveaway would not be possible if it wasn't for the help of generous donors in the community.

"Some of it is donations and some of it is of the church itself. We raised money to prepare for this day," says Thomas.

"We've had people privately donate funds to us so that this event can take place again this year. We are very thankful," says Jackson

Because it's those donations that allow Jackson and her congregation to continue helping those less fortunate.  "This is what Christmas is about. It's about serving God's people," says Jackson.

The food will be placed in boxes and given to anybody who has a need.  If you or someone you know could use the food, you're asked to come to First Apostolic Church located on 421 Lumpkin Street here in east Albany.

For more information, you can call the church at 888-3850. The food give away will kick off at 8 AM Saturday and run through 1 PM.  Organizers only ask that you bring some form of identification.
