Sparky brings holiday cheer to SGMC

December 11, 2007

Valdosta - Home is the best place to be for the holidays, but some children may not have that option.

"We hope no child has to spend Christmas in the hospital but there may be a situation where that may happen," says Laura Love of South Georgia Medical Center.

Those kids are sent here to the pediatric ward at South Georgia Medical Center.  "Its traumatic for a child to be in the hospital anyway and during the holidays just compounds it because they are missing all the festivities that are going on," says Fire Chief Jim Fielding.

Lowndes County Fire and Rescue and Sparky the Fire Dog are hoping to bring the holiday cheer back to these halls.  "We visit all the new admitted children and Spark gives them a new toy."

They'll be handing out more than 100 toys between now and Christmas, all donated from the community.

"It doesn't come out of peoples pockets.  It just comes out of people's hearts."

So while these children may not be home for the holidays, they hope to make it the next best thing.
